Dragon Tiger is the simplest card game in the casino. Two cards are dealt — one to Dragon, one to Tiger — and the higher card wins. No drawing, no decisions, no third-card rule, no hand total. A round takes about twenty-five seconds. That is the whole game.
The simplicity is real, and so is what it costs. The main bets carry a house edge of 3.73%, which sounds modest until you set it beside baccarat’s Banker bet at 1.06%. Dragon Tiger is roughly three and a half times more expensive than the game it was derived from, and it deals nearly twice as many rounds per hour. Those two effects compound.
The edge comes from one rule most players skim past: when Dragon and Tiger tie, you lose half your stake. That rule is not a detail. It is the entire house edge. Make ties a push instead and the Dragon/Tiger bet becomes a mathematically perfect coin flip with an edge of exactly zero. We prove that below.
Everything else on the table is worse. The Tie bet at the common 8-to-1 payout carries a 32.77% house edge — worse than almost any wager in a licensed casino, and even at the better 11-to-1 price it still costs 10.36%. What you buy is speed and clarity; what you pay is a poor price per bet on a game with no strategic content at all.

What Dragon Tiger Actually Is
Dragon Tiger is baccarat with everything removed. Each side gets exactly one card and the higher rank wins.
Neither betting position has any structural advantage — no commission on either, no drawing asymmetry, no reason to prefer one. Dragon and Tiger are symmetrical in every mathematical respect, and the game would be identical if the boxes were labelled Left and Right.
Card ranking follows poker with one exception: the Ace is always low, so the order runs Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King. Suits play no part in the main bet — a King of clubs beats a Queen of hearts and ties a King of hearts. They matter only for the Suited Tie and, on some tables, a dedicated Suit wager.
The tie rule is where the game earns its money. When both cards land on the same rank, players holding Dragon or Tiger lose half their stake. Marketing copy phrases this as “half your bet is returned,” which is the same thing described more pleasantly. It happens roughly once every thirteen and a half rounds.
Where the Game Came From
Dragon Tiger emerged in Cambodian gambling halls in the 1990s. The design brief was speed: a game a dealer could turn over in seconds, needing no explanation and no arithmetic, for rooms where a large number of small bets moved quickly.
It spread through Southeast Asia and reached Macau in the 2000s, including the high-limit salons where its low-friction pace suited players who wanted volume rather than deliberation. From there it followed every other Asian table game into the online live-dealer studios of the early 2010s.
Its persistence makes structural sense. Baccarat already dominated Asian floors, and Dragon Tiger offered the same experience — two symmetrical boxes, a tie in the middle, a roadmap on the display — with the drawing rules stripped out and round time roughly halved.
How to Play, Step by Step
1. Check the rules first. Confirm two numbers: what the Tie bet pays, and what happens to the main bet on a tie. Tie payouts range from 8:1 to 11:1 depending on provider, a difference worth over twenty percentage points of house edge. The main-bet tie rule should be a half loss; a full-loss table costs 7.47% instead of 3.73%.
2. Bet during the window. Live tables allow roughly 15 to 16 seconds, and you can back any combination of positions.
3. Watch the deal. On most implementations the dealer burns the top card, then deals one card face up to Dragon and one to Tiger. The burn has no effect on your odds.
4. Compare ranks. Higher card wins. Ace low, King high, suits ignored.
5. Collect or don’t. Winning Dragon or Tiger bets pay 1:1. On a tie, main bets lose half. Tie pays 8:1 or 11:1; Suited Tie pays 50:1 where offered.
6. The next round starts immediately. There is no break and no natural stopping point — a design feature worth being conscious of.
The Math, From First Principles
This is the part that matters, and the part most Dragon Tiger guides either get wrong or copy. Everything below is derived from the shoe composition, then checked against figures published by Evolution, Pragmatic Play and the Wizard of Odds.
The shoe
The standard game uses eight decks: 8 × 52 = 416 cards, across 13 ranks, giving 8 × 4 = 32 cards of each rank and 8 copies of each exact card.
Probability of a tie
Deal the Dragon card first. Its rank does not matter — the argument holds for any rank by symmetry. Call it rank r.
There are now 415 cards left, and the number that also have rank r is 32 minus the one already dealt, which is 31. So:
P(Tie) = 31 / 415 = 0.0746987951… ≈ 7.4699%
That is roughly one tie every 13.4 rounds.
Probability Dragon or Tiger wins
If the round is not a tie, one side is higher and one is lower. Nothing about the deal favours either box — both cards come from the same shoe under the same distribution — so the non-tie probability splits exactly in half:

Apply the payoffs — win pays 1:1, loss costs 1, tie costs half:

Evolution publishes 96.27%. Pragmatic Play publishes 96.27%. The Wizard of Odds gives 3.73%. All three match the derivation.
The tie-push variant, and why it does not exist
Run the same calculation with the tie treated as a push:
EV = (+1)(192/415) + (−1)(192/415) + (0)(31/415) = 0
Exactly zero. Not approximately — algebraically, precisely zero.
This is the most important fact about Dragon Tiger and it is almost never stated plainly. The main wager is a symmetric bet on a symmetric proposition with no built-in edge at all. The casino’s entire margin comes from taking half your stake on the 7.47% of rounds that tie.
That is why no commercial table pushes on ties: it would be a break-even game. If you see one advertised, the edge has been moved elsewhere — a commission on wins, a cut payout, or a tie rule that differs from the marketing copy.
For completeness, a full-loss tie rule gives EV = −31/415 = −0.0746988, or 7.4699% house edge, RTP 92.53% — exactly double. This matters practically: one live-casino review site states that Evolution’s Dragon Tiger loses the full stake on a tie while quoting an RTP in the 96% range. Those claims are incompatible, because a full-loss rule produces 92.53%. Evolution’s own rules specify a half return and the published RTP confirms it. When a published figure contradicts a published rule, the arithmetic tells you which is the typo.
Why more decks make the main bet worse
The house edge is exactly half the tie probability, and that depends on deck count. With d decks, P(Tie) = (4d − 1) / (52d − 1).

More decks means more matching cards remain after the first is dealt, so ties get likelier and the half-loss rule bites more often. Eight decks is the worst common configuration for the main bet — and the best one for the Tie bet, which improves as decks are added.
The Tie bet
The Tie bet wins on 7.4699% of rounds. Its cost depends entirely on the payout, where providers diverge sharply.
At 8 to 1 (Ezugi and several regional suppliers): EV = 8 × (31/415) − (384/415) = (248 − 384)/415 = −136/415 = −0.3277108 House edge 32.7711%. RTP 67.23%.

The fair price — the payout at which the bet would break even — is 384 / 31 = 12.387 to 1. Even the generous 11:1 leaves a wide margin, and 8:1 takes roughly a third of every stake.
The Suited Tie bet
Suited Tie needs both cards to match in rank and suit. After the Dragon card is dealt, the cards matching both are 8 minus 1 = 7, out of 415.

Break-even payout: 408 / 7 = 58.29 to 1. Note the pricing asymmetry: at 11:1 the Tie returns about 89.6% of a fair price, while at 50:1 the Suited Tie returns about 86.0%. The flashier bet with the bigger headline number is the worse deal — the normal pattern for long shots everywhere.
Big/Small, Odd/Even and Suit bets
These appear on Ezugi, Pragmatic Play and regional tables but not on Evolution’s standard game. They wager on a single card — Dragon’s or Tiger’s, bet separately — rather than on the comparison.
Big/Small. Small wins on Ace through 6, Big on 8 through King, and a 7 loses both. Six winning ranks out of thirteen either way:

Odd/Even. Pragmatic Play defines Odd as A, 3, 5, 9, J, K and Even as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q, with the 7 losing both. Six ranks each side, so the arithmetic is identical: 7.6923%.
That construction repays attention. With the Ace low there are seven odd ranks and six even ones, so a straight Odd bet at 1:1 would win 7/13 of the time and give the player a 7.69% edge. Removing the 7 from the odd group is precisely what flips a player-favourable bet into a house-favourable one. The Wizard of Odds suspects some tables exclude the Ace instead; either construction gives the same 6-versus-7 split and the same 7.69%.
Suit bet. You call a card’s suit at 3 to 1, and a 7 loses regardless of suit, so you win when the card is your suit and is not a 7:

Again the seven rule does all the work. Without it, 3:1 on a 1-in-4 shot is exactly fair: 3(0.25) − 0.75 = 0. The entire margin is manufactured by voiding one rank out of thirteen, and it is invisible to anyone who does not do the arithmetic.
Two Red / Two Black and One Red & One Black
Asia Live Tech offers colour-combination bets resolving on both cards, with the usual half-loss tie rule. Counting the 416 × 415 / 2 = 86,320 unordered pairs:
Two Red at 3 to 1 — both red gives C(208,2) = 21,528, less the 13 × C(16,2) = 1,560 that tie, leaving 19,968 wins, so P(win) = 0.2313253 and EV = 3(0.2313253) − 0.5(0.0746988) − 0.6939759 = −0.0373494.
One Red & One Black at even money — 208 × 208 = 43,264, less 16 × 16 × 13 = 3,328 tied, leaves 39,936 wins, so P(win) = 0.4626506 and EV lands on −0.0373494 again.
Both hit exactly the main-bet edge of 3.7349%, because both are the same structure: a symmetric proposition with the half-loss tie rule bolted on. The tie rule is the entire margin every time.
Where published figures disagree
Several aggregator tables do not survive checking. One widely-cited list gives SA Gaming’s Odd bet at 0.75:1 with a 53.85% win rate and quotes 93.50% RTP. Run it: EV = 0.75 × (7/13) − (6/13) = −0.0576923, so 94.23%. The same table gives Even at 1.05:1 and quotes 94.74%; correctly, 1.05 × (6/13) − (7/13) = −0.0538462, or 94.62%. It quotes 94.74% again for Red/Black at 0.9:1, where the true figure is 0.9(0.5) − 0.5 = −0.05, or 95.00%.
The recurring 94.74% is a tell: that is 18/19, the RTP of single-zero roulette, dropped into a Dragon Tiger table where it does not belong. Treat published side-bet tables as leads to verify, not facts.

The practical reading is short. Bet Dragon or Tiger. Everything else costs between 40% and 780% more per unit staked.
Strategy: An Honest Accounting
There is no Dragon Tiger strategy. Not “limited strategy,” not “strategy for advanced players.” None.
In blackjack your decisions change the hand’s expected value, which is why basic strategy exists. In Dragon Tiger you place a chip on one of two identical boxes and the dealer turns two cards. There is nothing to optimise because there is nothing to decide.
What exists is bet selection, and it collapses to three rules. Bet Dragon or Tiger and treat them as interchangeable — identical probabilities, identical payouts, and any preference is aesthetic. Never touch the Tie bet, which costs 10.36% at its best price and 32.77% at its worst. Skip the side bets at 7.69%, which exist mainly to give your money more surfaces to leak through.
The systems widely promoted for this game — Martingale, Paroli, D’Alembert, 1-3-2-6, “follow the streak,” “fade the streak” — change none of the numbers above. That is not an opinion about effectiveness; it is structural. The expected value of a sequence of bets is the sum of the expected values of the individual bets, and no rule for choosing stake sizes turns a negative sum positive. Progressions reshape the distribution of outcomes but leave the mean fixed at −3.73% of total money wagered.
Martingale deserves a specific warning because it is pushed harder here than almost anywhere. Doubling after a loss needs a table maximum you will never reach and a bankroll you do not have, and it interacts badly with the tie rule: a tie is a half loss, not a push, so a doubling sequence gets dented by a result most system descriptions ignore entirely.
The only genuine levers are stake size and time played. Those are not strategy. They are budgeting.
Card Counting: What Is Real and What Is Not
Dragon Tiger is one of the few games where counting has a documented theoretical basis — the Wizard of Odds notes that the big, small and suit bets “would be highly countable.” That is true, and in live online play it is also close to useless.
The mechanism
Tie probability depends on the composition of the remaining shoe. If nᵢ cards of rank i remain out of N:

The structural point is that for a fixed number of cards remaining, Σnᵢ² is minimised when ranks are evenly distributed. A shoe that has drifted out of balance — some ranks stripped, others barely touched — has a higher tie probability than a balanced one. The counter wants imbalance.
The thresholds
For the Tie at 11:1 to be profitable you need 11p − (1 − p) > 0, so p > 1/12 = 8.333% — a 12% relative rise on the 7.4699% base. At 8:1 you need p > 1/9 = 11.111%, a 49% rise and a far harder target.
How often the shoe gets there
Simulating 200,000 full eight-deck shoes and measuring residual tie probability at fixed depths:

Two things stand out. The mean tie probability never moves — it stays pinned at 7.47% however deep you go, exactly as an unbiased draw implies, and only variance grows. And at 50% penetration the Tie bet at 11:1 was never profitable across 200,000 shoes. Not rarely — never. The best composition seen still fell short of break-even.
Walking a real shoe
A sharper test: simulate 20,000 complete shoes with the cut card at one deck remaining — roughly where Evolution is reported to change its shoe, and deeper than most operators go — dealing a burn plus two cards per round, about 122 rounds per shoe. Then count the rounds offering a genuine advantage.

This confirms the Wizard’s remark and sharpens it. The Tie bet is barely countable even on generous assumptions — two-thirds of one opportunity per shoe, average edge under 4%, and you would need thirteen simultaneous rank counts in real time to find it. Big/Small and Suit are a different story: because they track six ranks out of thirteen, or one suit, they drift far more than tie density does. A perfect counter flat-betting only on positive edges would win roughly 0.8 units per shoe on Big/Small and roughly 4.9 on Suit.
Why the operators are ahead of you
Pragmatic Play disables its side bets once the shoe has run 50 hands. That looks arbitrary until you measure it:

Cutting the side bets after hand 50 drops a perfect counter’s yield on the Suit bet from about 4.9 units per shoe to about 0.14, and on Big/Small from about 0.8 to essentially nothing. The countermeasure is calibrated with some precision to remove exactly the part of the shoe where these bets become exploitable.
The practical barriers
Shuffle procedure. Many online tables shuffle early, use pre-shuffled shoes, or run continuous shuffling machines. A shoe that never depletes never develops a count.
Speed. At 25 seconds a round with a 15-second betting window, you have a few seconds to update thirteen rank counts, four suit counts and a total, compute a residual probability and decide. That is not a realistic human task, and software assistance is a terms breach that gets accounts closed and balances confiscated.
Bet limits. Advantage play needs spreading — small at neutral counts, large at favourable ones. Per-position maximums cap the spread, and sharp ramping on side bets is among the most visible patterns risk analytics look for.
Bankroll versus edge. A 4% edge available sixteen times a shoe, on a game with large round-to-round variance, demands a bankroll that dwarfs the advantage.
It never touches the main bet. Removing a single card from a balanced eight-deck shoe changes P(Tie) by less than 0.00001 percentage points. The 3.73% is effectively immovable.
The honest summary: counting in Dragon Tiger is real mathematics attached to bets operators have already restricted, on a game whose speed makes execution implausible, for an edge that would not survive the variance. Interesting theory, bad plan.
Variants and Providers
Evolution Dragon Tiger is the reference implementation. Eight decks, shoe reportedly changed with about one deck left, half the main bet returned on a tie. Payouts are 1:1 on Dragon and Tiger, 11:1 on Tie and 50:1 on Suited Tie, with published RTP of 96.27% / 89.64% / 86.02%, and rounds run about 25 seconds. Evolution offers no Big/Small, Odd/Even or Suit bets — a deliberately minimal layout that happens to omit the most countable wagers.
Lightning Dragon Tiger is Evolution’s multiplier variant. A 20% Lightning fee is taken from your total bet before each round, and one suit per round is designated the Lightning suit, receiving a 2x to 8x multiplier applied to all four positions. Payouts run 1:1 to 8:1 on the main bets, 6.5:1 to 52:1 on Tie and 20:1 to 1,280:1 on Suited Tie, with the half return on ties still applying, and published RTP is 96.97% / 91.26% / 82.93%. The headline main-bet figure looks better than the standard game, but you stake 1.2 units for every 1 unit of nominal bet, so money at risk per round is 20% higher and variance far higher.
Pragmatic Play Live Dragon Tiger uses eight decks with a burn card each round and reportedly changes the shoe with two decks left. Payouts match Evolution at 1:1, 11:1 and 50:1, and it adds Big/Small and Odd/Even at 1:1 and 92.31% RTP, disabled after 50 hands.
Ezugi Dragon Tiger is the version to check most carefully: its Tie pays 8:1, a 32.77% house edge rather than Evolution’s 10.36%. Ezugi also offers Suit at 3:1 plus Big/Small and Odd/Even at 1:1, all at 7.69%. The main bet is the same 3.73%.
Asia Live Tech / Asia Gaming tables add the colour bets described above, all at 3.73%. SA Gaming runs asymmetric Odd and Even pricing at 0.75:1 and 1.05:1, producing 5.77% and 5.38% — the least bad non-main bets in the game, and still worse than backing Dragon.
The practical point: the main bet is 3.73% everywhere, but the Tie ranges from 10.36% to 32.77%. Check the Tie payout before you sit down even if you never intend to bet it, because it tells you how aggressively the table is priced.
